Researchers from low- and lower-middle-income countries will now be able to publish without author charges or any other fee in Nature and 36 related Nature research journals, as the company expands its open access waiver policies to include its flagship titles.
Under open access (OA) publishing, readers can access published papers for free but researchers or their institutions have to pay article processing charges to get their manuscripts published.
In the past, it meant that scientists from low- and middle-income countries were effectively excluded, as there is little institutional support to cover article processing charges, which sometimes total more than their yearly salaries.

Dr Nwaichi, a biochemist at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, has been awarded the 2022 John Maddox Prize for engaging communities in conflict to research solutions to pollution in the oil fields of the Niger Delta. The judges commended her for putting forward evidence and trial methods for soil recovery, courageously advancing public discourse with sound science despite the personal risk.
The John Maddox Award recognises individuals who stand up for sound science and evidence in the public realm, despite facing hostility and personal risks. It is important that we acknowledge and appreciate the tireless efforts these individuals have made in order to advance public discussion on difficult topics.
