The recognition of the role that libraries and other information service providers can and do play in the knowledge society, in bridging the digital divide and in their unique ability to support a country’s development goals has led to renewed interest in the establishment of national information policies.
In October 2010, NIDA was invited to manage and coordinate a team of international and national researchers across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa to develop a national framework for library policy.
Three components were included: desk research leading to preparation of a background paper; development of case studies to illustrate forward-thinking/innovative practice; and, development of a draft library policy framework.
The research was concluded at the end of 2011 and since then NIDA has been working with a number of countries to adapt, test and implement the framework.
