PVI’s mission is to use media, technology, and popular culture to catalyze social change in East Africa and beyond.
Description of work
Peripheral Vision International (PVI) is an award-winning international non-profit that uses media, technology, and popular culture to catalyze social change around the world, with a special focus on last mile communities in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the world’s largest youth population lives. Together with partners, PVI has designed television programs, videos, audio games and comics that have been viewed, read, interacted with, or listened to hundreds of millions of times across dozens of countries.
PVI designs and implements media projects that teach, engage, and inspire. PVI is a nimble and responsive organization that can rapidly mobilize creative, innovative, and disruptive media projects in response to crises or urgent problems, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Taken as a whole, PVI’s projects support social change, correct misinformation, elevate underrepresented communities, and ensure young people around the world have the information they need to live healthier and more productive lives.
Results
PVI is a leader in the field of entertainment-education and its founder is co-editor of the recently published collection, “Entertainment-Education Behind the Scenes: Case Studies for Theory and Practice”, which brings together many of the leading practitioners and scholars in the field.
Resources used or generated
N*Gen, Africa’s first science show for kids, is already reaching millions of children and families through free-to-air pro bono tv broadcast on 33 different broadcasters across 11 countries in Africa (Botswana, Eswatini, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe), and across Africa on MNET’s Africa Magic Family Channel. It is also broadcast in the US/Caribbean on The Africa Channel, and in summer 2021 it launched on Common Sense Media’s new streaming service (available through Samsung, VIZIO, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Peacock, iOS and Android). N*Gen is also available to over 50 million students and 5 million educators across 90 countries via Discovery Education, which is in half the classrooms in the US. The project is unique in that it elevates African scientists and educators for a western audience.
